Retail Jobs for Beginners and Seasoned Workers

| More

Retail jobs are the jobs of people who work at stores who sell small a quantity of items such as one sweater or a dozen eggs to a consumer a place like Wal-Mart or Target. A wholesaler would be someone who sells more than one item at reduced cost; Sam’s Club – a division of Wal-Mart – would be considered a wholesale store because they sell items in bulk, mostly to businesses, both small and larg e so that they can resell the items at retail costs to make a profit.

Most retail jobs have taken a ‘hit’ with the state of the economy because shoppers have cut back on their spending, especially their discretionary spending on thing they might want but don’t really need in order to pay off their mounting debit or to pay monthly bills like their utility bills that have been slowly increasing by large numbers.

Many, if not all retail service jobs are hourly wages and attract mostly first time or returning workers to the job force. Teenagers and elderly adults work in retail because it is often times a demanding yet under paid and under appreciated job. Shoppers can sometimes become unruly during the holiday season or other times when there are large sales promotions, especially if a store runs out of an item like a certain toy or electronic gadget. Patrons to a particular store who are desperate to purchase a certain item often take their frustrations out on the retail sales clerks without realizing it’s not their fault the store maybe out of a certain item. Other times retail sales clerks are less then helpful because they are paid so little, overworked and underpaid.

Retail jobs are often long hours at minimum wage with little chance for advancement and a high turnover of employees. Teenagers take retail jobs as a way of gaining work experience, working with money and customers and then parlay that experience in to better jobs once they have completed high school or college.

What advancements are available in the retail jobs industry are supervisory positions and they are worked even longer hours at a salary position which equals less pay and a better title. Some of these supervisory positions come with more responsibility like opening and closing the retail stores, dealing with customer service issues such as complaints and monitoring cash receipts in addition to hiring and firing employees.

Some of the skills required for a retail job include math skills, social and intra-personal skills, critical thinking skills, both written and oral communion skills and the ever important ‘joy of working with the public’, which many people begin with but slowly loose over time.
