What To Do During A Snow Storm—How to Stay Safe and Entertained During a Snow Storm

| More

During a snow storm you have to stay safe and keep yourself entertained. Whether it is a small snow storm and the kids are out of school for a few days, or it is the snow storm of the century, learn how to stay warm, stay prepared, and keep you and your family entertained.

During a snow storm, you should always try to stay indoors and at your house as much as possible. Be sure that you bundl e up properly and keep paying your utilities bills. Stay warm in your house by wearing extra layers and using your heat. If you absolutely have to go out for food or work, and then make sure you are prepared for anything. Have necessary items in your car like snacks, water, blankets, shovel, and a cell phone.

Do your best to stay indoors as much as you can, and do not go out unless it is absolutely necessary. You may have to use alternative sources of heat in your home, but be sure what you are using is safe for your home. Do not use anything meant for outside in your home, such as grills or camp stoves. Safe sources of heat for your home include space heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, and kerosene heaters.

Your kids are going to want to go out and play in the snow, but try to give them other fun activities to do because it is most likely too cold for them to be outside. If it is below 20 degrees wind chill, it is too cold for your children to just be playing outside, but if you cannot get them to resist the new white snow, bundle them up and be sure all of their skin is covered—also let them out when it is the warmest part of the day and do not let them stay out very long.

So how do you keep your children entertained inside for an entire day? It can be pretty difficult, especially if you do not want them staring at a television or computer screen all day. You can make homemade items for your kids to play with (or help make) such as: bubbles, finger paints, play dough, or goop. Also, a great thing to do during a snowstorm is to make snow ice cream!

If your power is out, then not only is your stress high and your toes freezing, but the kids are probably driving you insane because they are bored. Something fun you can do with your kids is look through old photo albums, scrapbooks, or baby books. You can do this with a flashlight, and you can also share stories (like we do around campfires). This will help pass the time quickly and keep everyone calm.

Also be sure to have the weather station on, either on your TV or radio. You want to hear any national weather service announcements. Also, if you have the radio on, you and your kids can dance around the house, maybe even do some spring cleaning!! As long as you keep you and your family warm and entertained, time will pass by quickly and your life will be back to normal in no time!
