2010 Grammy Awards

This year’s theme of ‘We’re all Fans’ rang true at the 2010 Grammys held on January 31st. There was something for everyone, from Miley Cyrus to Jay-Z and The Black Eyed Peas; Pink performed a circus act with undertones of a strip act and several Grammy nominated artists performed their hit songs to what could only be linked to an un-tuned piano.

The night began with a performance by a woma n who can really belt out a tune. Sometimes subtle in her singing style but never in her clothing, Lady Gaga sang out ‘Poker Face’ for the crowd of music fans at the Los Angel Staples Center.

Lady Gaga later went on to win in two of her five nominated categories. She won for Best Dance Recording and Best Electric/Dance Album – ‘The Fame.’

The Dave Matthews Band performed after several nominees and awards were handed out. They performed a fitting tribute to their late friend and bandmate LeRoi Moore, a saxophonist with the band for many years. DMB performed ‘You and Me’ which included accompaniment from a string section, violinist Boyd Tinsley, a percussion assembly and a full choir of singers to help Dave along.

The Dave Matthews Band was celebrating their first ever nominated Album of the year and although the song was a dedication to a sad moment, the loss of a good friend and coworker, Dave sang ‘okay’ and did a funky and odd little dance during the bridge of his song before returning to the microphone stand to finish.

Singer Pink showed off what could only be compared to what many thought of as a ‘strip-tease’ only without taking off her clothing with her circus act that had her flying high above the stage on a white cloth as water poured over her, and yes, she was singing the entire time! Pink sang ‘Glitter in the Air’ as she showed off her powerful acrobatic skills swinging, turning and tumbling around and around on a white sheet, never missing a beat or loosing her grip.

Pink was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her hit single ‘So What?’ and Best Pop Album ‘Funhouse.’

Taylor Swift, the svelte country singer, not only performed, but took home several Grammys including the nights top honors, Album of the year for ‘Fearless’ making her the youngest in Grammy history to receive such honors. Swift is only 20-years-old and this would have been the night of her life if she would have not agreed to sing.

What most people are talking about this morning is not how many or which Grammys Swift received, it was her awful duets with Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac fame. The pair sang or rather tried to sing a rendition of Nicks’ former band’s song ‘Rhiannon’ as well as ‘You Belong to Me’ and ‘Today was a Fairytale.’ High pitches evoking imagines of cats screeching would be a fitting description.

Everyone missed the beat at the Grammys; T-Pain, Jamie Foxx and Slash butchered their version of ‘Blame it’ while Lil Wayne, Drake and Eminem each delivered what could only be understood by those in attendance because the ‘beep’ machines were put in overdrive with the amount of profanity spewing from their lyrical styling’s.
