So, What Is The Climate Like In Copenhagen?

| More

The world is wearing out or so it would seem. We are both aware of this and at the same time skeptical about what to do about it. The problem is that with all the facts and figures we are still only able to assume that we are the sole cause of climatic change without knowing with 100% certainty that it is our fault.

The anticipated Copenhagen conference comes at a time when the Kyoto Protocol i s reaching its best before date. The Kyoto Protocol which has been seen by many as the “guiding light” for the prevention of climatic changes and global warming runs out in 2012, and without a new Protocol, all the work that has been done so far will fall in to disarray.

The Copenhagen conference will be the last in the series of high ranking meetings before the worlds Governments need to implement a new agreement to tackle climate change and global warming.

Energy, transport, industry, pollution – just about everything that makes up our modern world- seems to also be destroying it. Yet, we are so entrenched in our modern world that we can only ask ourselves how we can keep what we have without destroying what we’ve got.

“We have the power to save the world now” or at least, that’s the slogan being popularized at the COP15 this year, together with such propaganda videos as those that seemingly would be more fittingly placed on the Sci-Fi channel!

There has been somewhat of a controversial response to work done by the CRU (climatic research unit) of the University of East Anglia UK, which suggests that there is nothing wrong with the climate and that the planet is merely going through cycles. Death threats have been sent to numerous CRU scientists’ whose research remained confidential until their private emails were hacked and publicized.

The real issue here, which is not being openly or consciously discussed, is that of our humanity. It is our responsibility to ensure and preserve the very own future. This has always been our responsibility whether it is war prevention, poverty, protecting minorities from racism or indeed helping to maintain a world that is inhabitable for humans.

What if we are simply unable to change a thing no matter what we do? Then -rather than what CAN we do)-what WILL we do?

Are we going to simply ignore what state our world is coming to? Will people have a sudden spiritual awakening and turn to prayer? Will people turn to the use superstitious rituals as a way to feel as though our actions still count for something?

Obviously personal change will come if the general public is faced with a reality that harms our lives in a noticeable or traumatic way. If that happens we cannot predict how human reaction will develop, although our spiritual nature is likely to guide parts of humanity. Throughout our history we have relied on spiritual or supernatural means in times when we don’t know what is going on or what to do about it. In the dark ages people believed their sins caused of the death of myriads of people through the Plague! The ancient Pharaohs were totally obsessed with life after death and with all their power they still could not prevent death. In our time a death row prisoner can suddenly in his last moments on earth start praying to a god he never believed in.

Let’s hope that our efforts pay off and the climate starts to recover before it is too late.
