Obama and Medvedev sign Strategic Arms Strategy Reduction Treaty (START) in Effort to Start Global Zero

For years now, nuclear weapons have been a rising issue, and while many people dismiss the issue because nothing has happened yet. It is time to take action now before something tragic does occur. Currently the United States and Russia obtain 96% of the total nuclear weapons in the world, therefore, these two countries must take the first step in reducing the amount of nuclear weapons, and Presiden t Barack Obama and President Dmitry Medvedev signed one of the largest nuclear arms pacts in history.

The United States President Obama and Russian President Medvedev signed START on Thursday, April 08, 2010. The Strategic Arms Strategy Reduction Treaty (START) will decrease the amount of nuclear weapons held by the US and Russia by almost a third. Before the treaty the United States and Russian’s nuclear arms combined added up to 22,000 weapons.

The last time this big of an impact was made on the reduction of nuclear weapons was in the 1980’s. President Ronald Reagan tried to start a movement in which all nuclear weapons were disarmed, but the Cold War made this movement almost useless. Now President Obama has the same dreams of President Kennedy and Reagan, and he is on the right path to making it come true.

This treaty being signed is a significant first step in disarming nuclear weapons, but the two countries still possess many nuclear weapons, along with other countries around the world including the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, and possibly Israel. The United Kingdom, France, and China are likely to be a part of this goal to eliminate all nuclear weapons, but it will be a long drawn out process for every country involved. But in the end, the world would be a better place.

The overall goal is to eventually reach Global Zero, where all the world’s nuclear weapons and HEU are secured, accounted for, and guarded. The main concern now is how easy HEU is to get a hold of. It is said that a hundred pounds of HEU could fit into a shoe box… so it is extremely easy to smuggle and hide. But as the world reaches Global Zero, all of the HEU in the world will be kept track of securely and always be 100% accounted for. Therefore we will no longer be at threatened by nuclear bombs or nuclear war.
